Rickets

Weight bearing & stress on uncalcified bone in rickets causing 'splaying' & 'cupping' of metaphysis.

Radiograph of a 4 year old girl with rickets. Please note here the  bowing of legs caused by loading.

  1. Findings are:
1.Generalised osteopenia with coarse trabecular pattern
2.Paintbrush metaphysis[widened growth plate with irregularity, fraying and cupping(=splaying) of metaphysis]
3.Lack of zone of provisional calcification (i.e normal white line at metaphysis)
    4.Bow legs, decreased bone length
